3 Drawbacks of Buying an Established Blog

You might be wondering what could be the drawbacks of buying an already established blog. An established blog after all has so many advantages such as fixed revenue streams, large readership and huge traffic every day. Buying an already established blog is the best way to enter the blogosphere if you have that much of money. But when you do that, you should also keep in mind that there are some drawbacks associated with buying an established blog as well.

Here is a list of drawbacks when buying an established blog:

1. Sudden Drop in Readership Volume

When a blog is taken over by someone new then there is usually a sudden drop in the volume of readers. This happens because most readers subscribe to a blog because of the content written by that particular blogger who previously wrote on it. A sudden change in ownership causes a lot of readers to get negative about the future content of the blog, since most have got attached to the style of writing by the previous blogger. This causes a sudden drop in your readership volume.

2. Not Matching Up With Previous Quality Content

The main reason for the success of a blog is the flagship content which it has maintained. Unfortunately, if you are someone whose content does not match up with your predecessors then it can be an issue since it will not attract readers. Although your blog is established, it will not take long for it to lose its reputation if the quality of your content is not up-to-mark. This is why it is advisable that before you buy a blog you must ensure you will be able to provide the same quality content as before.

3. Author Reputation

If the previous blogger was someone who used to earn a six-figure income online or was a person of notable achievement in his field, then it could be the reason for the success of the blog. It is not advisable for buying such blogs, since people are following the blog since the blogger is very well-known. So when you take over the blog obviously the blog will suffer since it is no longer authoritative, unless you yourself are someone who has achieved something exceptional in the field as well.

Buying an established blog is a great idea, although it costs money. However, you must be aware about both pros and cons before you arrive at any decision. This is why I made this post on the drawbacks involved in buying an established blog. What are your thoughts on this topic? Let me know below.

Hi Anil,

I agree with your thoughts. I think buying an existing blog is not a good idea due to the reasons mentioned above.

I would create my own blog, and build it, instead of buying an existing blog.

Kindest,
Nabeel

I can’t really understand why buying an established blog would be so great. Just to avoid the long process of setting up your own blog? Or to get the brand name of that blog? It seems like both of those reasons would be defeated by the consequences above. It’s probably just easier all around to build up your own blog.

These are great reasons not to buy an established blog. The reason its established is because of the previous owner and if you can’t keep on the same level you will lose readers. Its better to establish the blog yourself so the the readers get to know you.

I think for sure depending on the type of blog you get yourself into, even if it is established, especially if you an inexperienced you might do more than harm than good.

Till then,

Jean

I really disagree with first point .I Think sudden drop in readership volume will not going to happen and one more point I want to put is that readers are not going to think about future post of the established blog. The new blog buyer can go with guest bloggers if he is not up to the mark on writing article. In my point of view purchasing an established blog will not going to make any impact on readers and followers.

A glass table made entirely out of glass is a great idea. The Blow High tables by Konstantin Grcic makes me think of the Sander Table by Chris Martin for Massproductions.

Certainly, blogging on other established blogs is a great way to gain exposure and a good opportunity to network with established players in this industry.

These are good reasons not to do it. I don’t think buying a established blog does much. People came to that blog for a reason are you going to provide the same info in the same way?
