Longtail SEO is something that every blogger will finally realize the importance. It is a Search Engine Optimization technique which is widely used. Longtail SEO is basically done by optimizing longtail keywords. A short keyword would generally have only 1-2 words such as – “Easy Money”, “Investment Tips” etc.

Whereas, Longtail Keywords are “long” as the term suggests. They have almost 4-5 terms, maybe even more. The interesting part is that despite these keywords being so unattractive – it is in fact, these keywords which are searched by millions of search engine users worldwide.

There are two key advantages of using Longtail Keywords: The first is that they are less competitive than your short and main stream keywords.  Secondly, they can easily rank well – without much effort.

The main reason why longtail keywords are less competitive is that not many webmaster will focus on longtails SEO. This can be because they are not very popular and are not as obvious as “short” keywords. Due to the extremely less competition offered in the longtail keywords, it becomes easy for you to rank even in the first page of Google.

Many new blogs and websites are advised to begin search engine optimizing their websites with longtail SEO – as it will help them develop readers when there are bigger sites which rank high for “short” keywords.

If you are thinking what are the tools that are available in the internet for finding effective longtail keywords. Then you are spoiled for choice. Google Adwords is the most obvious place a webmaster will go if he wants to look up a popular longtail keyword. Apart from that another popular alternative is Wordtracker.

It is difficult to rank well for a long tail keyword without actually applying the keyword in your content. It is important that you have enough unique content in your blog which has employed the longtail keyword you are ranking for. So the volume of content is very important.

In the end, I would like to conclude this astonishing fact that many big blogs and companies have concluded that 70% of their traffic comes from Longtail keywords. I am sure that you are also experiencing the same for your website. New blogs and websites especially, thrive on traffic from longtail keywords that are searched everyday.

SEO newbie question, to get a sense of what fraction of the ‘market” for a given longtail keyword.

You are exactly right about that. I do have trouble with them sometime yet they do yield better responses. I find myself sometimes searching whole sentences, I am unsure why there is such a trend with two word keywords.

You will eventually get your primary keyword if you focus on all the long tail related keywords. In fact its the foundation of building a solid website. When going after long tail keywords, don’t forget one of the factors is LSI – latent semantic indexing.
