It is very easy to get confused while selecting a theme due to the large number of options that are available on the internet. WordPress themes are in great demand and there are many developers who have created themes that cater to different niches of blog. And it is your responsibility to choose a theme that is perfectly suited for your blog. Themes are important because it is the first impression that you give to your readers. Choosing a poor theme may put off your readers and also cause poor readability of your posts.

This post will help you in choosing a theme for your blog. It will help eliminate a few doubts you may have regarding themes.

Background

The background of your theme must always be lighter to the text color. Especially a blog which is dedicated to textual content should have white background like blog on tutorials, Blogging, MMO and so on. Blogs like Gaming; Hacking may have a dark background. However, it is always recommended that you have a white background as it helps in the best readability of what you write.

Customizing

It is important to know how easy the theme is to customize, as you may want to add a lot of extra widgets or features to your blog. However, some blog themes provide a very low level of flexibility while you try to customize them. Some themes can be customized to a very high level – as you are also able to choose whether you require two or three columns and so on. So be careful on this point.

Color Scheme

Another very important parameter of the blog theme, the color scheme should be friendly to the eye. Again, ensure that the colors match the niche of your blog. Having a pink and light blue color scheme for a blog on Technology would be rather stupid and most readers may not even take you seriously.

Image or Content Oriented

You have to know whether your blog should be friendlier to huge number of photos then you can choose a photography blog theme. Many blogger also go for the magazine-styled theme since it allows you to show a large number of content in the front page. The down side is that unfortunately most magazine themes provide poor navigation. So you need to be the person deciding this point.

Theme customization is something I’ve come to learn on my own since I work heavily with free wordpress themes. My current theme still undergoes changes, day in day out and it’s so different from the original theme ;-)
